There aren't really specific amounts. I just bought the 60 oz. bottle of Downy and poured the whole thing in a rectangular pan (like many people use). When you are done with the dunk, you can just pour all of the Downy back into the bottle and use it again and again in the future.
There are also no specific amounts of shampoo and conditioner that you need to use -- just whatever it takes to get the job done.

I use about a cup of downy per head. But I put the downy in a small zip lock bag and put the dolls head in the bag. I make sure that all the hair gets in the downy by squeezing the bag until all the hair is coated with downy, without letting the downy get near her eyes. The bangs take extra work to make sure the downy coats them. Then I let the doll sit upside down in the downy for a day or so. Squeezing the bag ever so often to make sure the downy gets on all the hair. Someone listed that they wrap their doll's body in plastic wrap during this. I tried it and it was great, the plastic wrap keeps not only the dolls body dry, it also keeps the neck strings dry and out of the way.

I use the whole bottle in a rectangular pan, and then pour it back into the bottle when I'm done, like Melissa Olivia does.
I use about a capful of shampoo in a pitcher-full of water, to soak for about 10 minutes.
I tie the neck strings under the doll's armpits, to keep them from falling in any of the liquids and from getting in the way when I'm rinsing.

It's best to be cautious if putting the doll in the Downy upside-down. There is a hole in the top of the head from the mold, and Downy can get inside the head.
I use a bread pan, laying the doll on a pizza box or books to bring her up to the correct level. I use a measuring cup to pour the Downy over the roots and bangs.

You can avoid getting downy on the doll's body and neckstrings by simply untying the strings and taking the doll's head off for the treatment--much easier to work with! (But may be disconcerting to small children)

Thanks so much for your help!!
I don't think I should take Samantha's head off for the dunk! I don't know if I'd be able to put her head back on!
